DYP News - Highligths 2009

October

Summer is surely over. For a few days it even seemed that fall will not take place this year. Night frost and snow in higher elevations brought a foretaste of oncoming winter.

That means winter clothes are needed. We already had a few donations to buy some warm jackets but more funding would be very much appreciated.

In August we took some of the youth to the "Museum of the Fur Trade" . It is small but very informative museum about the history of the fur trade. Fur traders were the first white people who Native Americans were exposed to. The kids liked it and we will surely do this again next summer.

A lot of kids like to participate in Powwows. This is fun especially during summer time, when the compeitions are held outside. Here are two pictures of young dancers at a Powwow in Porcupine:

We also saw youth in the typical Hip Hop outfit at the Sundance drums singing the sacred songs. We are glad that the traditions are carried on despite the big influence of the Hip Hop culture on Reservation Youth.

Summer, our "Rezkid of the Month", found a sponsor from the U.S.
A German couple, who was vacationing in Florida, bought her the clothes she was wishing for. In this picture she is wearing one of her new outfits:

We also found a sponsor for Summer's cousin, who we did not present on our website.

Here is a picture of Latoya and her daughter named "Ogligle Mikiyela" ("Angel close to me"):

She sure is a cute angel, that needs a lot of diapers... Donations for diapers are very welcome!

Four school classes from two different schools in Germany had a fundraiser for DYP. The money was used to buy shoes and clothes. Thank you again to all these school kids that showed so much commitment!

School is out for summer. The kids are busy with their summer acitivities, like summer school, sports, visiting relatives, attending or participating in Powwows and Sundances etc.

DYP will have a summer break until September. Until then we will not update this website and we will not present a "Rezkid of the Month". But we will still help children and youth according to the available funds.

We wish all friends and supportes of DYP a great summer!

April

We are recovering from fierce winter weather which had a tight grip on us for quite some time. Recently we had a blizzard once a week for three weeks in a row. Although it is only raining at the moment, it is still very cold and heating bills are still hefty. Spring made several attempts to come to Indian Country but could not stand up against winter so far.

Due to donations from Spain and Austria we could get some boxing gear to keep some of the kids busy throughout that dreary weather:

Congratulations to:

- our "Rezkid" Latoya who switched role and became the mother of a baby girl at the end of March. (We will try to show a picture of the new addition next time)

- our "Rezkid" Wiconi who was, again this year, Champion of the wrestling tournament of the State of South Dakota in her age group.

We found a German sponsor for Samuel, and we are still working to obtain the PS3 he is wishing for.

January

Due to donations from Europe and the U.S. we were able to brighten up the Holidays for some families on the reservation. Here is a little thank you for everybody that contributed:

Thank you kids

Things that kids on the reservation wish for are varied and often a little pricy. Even though the kids know deep down inside that these wishes will most probably never be fullfilled yet they still dare to make them because you'll never know... Here is the wish list of a 10-year old girl:

What we bought for the kids and families for Christmas you can see here.
