DYP News - Highlights 2006

November 2006

Our "Rez Kid of the Month", Jessica, has received the desired volleyball shoes and also a stereo. In addition, a sponsor from Germany has agreed to support the girl regularly. The photo shows Jessica unpacking her new stereo:

We also found a sponsor from Germany for another child. For certain reasons the 13-year-old girl could not be presented on our website.

After we had a mild fall, winter strikes in Indian country again. Many children are in need of warm jackets and winter shoes. The donation money that was received since September was primarily used for this.

Now we are preparing for this year's Christmas Gift Drive. Again we will distribute bags with fruit, nuts, candies and small presents to children on the reservation.

Our summer break is over and so is the summer season in the United States. Also the kids on Pine Ridge Reservation are back t school. Here is a short overview of the type of support we could give during the last three months:

DYP "Rez Kid of the Month" Maya participated for the third time in the Sundance Ceremony. She needed material for a Sundance Dress.

Every year before school starts again a lot of kids need school supplies and new clothes. We also helped out here according to our budget.

And also a young mother with a newborn baby needed help with baby clothes and diapers. The mother did not want to be on the picture, but here is a photo of the next generation:

Izaac, just arrived

On this web site you can see some of the activities of kids on Pine Ridge Reservation during their summer vacation.

One year ago DYP Board Member Steve Robideau passed away. Last weekend a small Memorial took place for him.

DYP "Rez Kid of the Month" Darren has received the portable CD player he had wished for as well as a battery charger and some CDs.

Also last month we have spent all the received donations on summer clothes. DYP members were in Rapid City on a "bargain hunt" for several hours to obtain as much clothes as possible for the available funds - successfully. Here is only one example of the "bargains”:

School is out for the summer and the summer season has started. Native American People use this time to visit relatives or to go to Powwows or Sun Dance Ceremonies. Often they have to travel far and it is difficult for us to get hold of them. This makes our work more complicated.

We therefore decided to have a summer break again this year. This means we will not introduce a new “Rez Kid Of The Month” or update our website. It does not mean that we will do nothing at all. We will provide help wherever possible. Therefore we are still in need of donations during the summer break.

We will update our website at the beginning of September and we wish a nice summer to all DYP supporters.

April 2006

We are glad to have received sufficient donations to buy the desired stereo system for Autumn, our last DYP “Rez Kid of the Months". She was really happy.

The Easter Holidays came up and some of the kids received Chocolate Bunnies from their European sponsors. To also make the other kids happy, who live in the same homes, we fixed some Easter baskets for them.

"Easter baskets" for kids

We already had some really warm days and families were asking for summer clothes for their kids. Luckily we had some funds available to help out in some of the cases.
If you wonder what kind of clothes kids on the reservation are wearing, here are some
pictures.
Our new "Rez Kid Of The Month" is Darren.

February 2006

We are very happy that due to the donations of a German Non-Profit Organization and the private donors from Germany and Austria, we were able to fulfil the wishes and needs of some Lakota youth.

Mission - "Basketball Goal"
Our "Rez Kid Of the Month", Lyndon, wished for a basketball goal. This mission was accomplished:

James Robideau, Lyndon and the disassembled basketball goal

Lyndon unpacks the parts and....

... his relatives help to assemble the basketball goal

Ready for playing basketball!

Lyndon was very happy. He also received a new basketball and he would like to thank everybody in Europe who helped out.
Lyndon has also found a sponsor from Germany who will support him on a monthly base.

Mission - "New Clothes"
We were also in the position to buy clothes for some youth like Ida Mae, who shows her new outfit of shirt. jeans, and hooded sweatshirt.
